Day 8 & 9 | Upper Mid-West Tour
Yesterday, Day 8, Tuesday, we did a lot of driving into the beautiful state of Montana. It is amazing how beautiful this state is from just the interstate. We followed the Yellowstone river for at least 100 miles yesterday. Also crossing the continental divide, and the truck with the BIG diesel engine handled it like a BOSS. We were set on cruise control and just went flying up and down the mountains, while the semi-trucks were struggling at altitude.

Tomorrow we are off to ride the Trail of Coeur d’Alene.
Few pictures were taken yesterday on the drive, we just admired the beauty of the state. This is a rest stop where we had lunch.
Later we stopped at a truck stop that was a “travel center” in a small little town to get some fuel, and they had everything that you would normally expect at a truck stop, basically a convenience store, AND a casino, restaurant, and a bakery. We bought 2 huge cinnamon rolls, this is just one, and yes it is a large to go styrofoam box.
While driving through St Regis, we also saw a business selling some yard art in case anyone needs some.
And then we landed at our great campsite for the next 3 nights in St. Regis, MT.
Today, Day 9, Wednesday, we got up early and drove to the Hiawatha to ride it, it is a rails to trails, that is the “Crown Jewel” of Rails to Trails. Once we got off the interstate we had to take a dirt road for 6 miles to get to the trailhead. The road was very steep and had many switchbacks. We decided to go to the farther trailhead and not the closer one, because we decided to skip the 1st 2 miles of the trail that goes through a 2 mile long dark, wet, and dripping water tunnel that is a constant 47 degrees year round. We had heard from others that had ridden The Hiawatha that there are plenty of other tunnels that you will go through, and the first one is a mess, so we heeded their advice and skipped it.
Here are some amazing pictures of our ride. The trestles were amazingly high and the winds were strong, but so beautiful.
Once we rode The Hiawatha, we had earned a great lunch at the 4 star diner on Yelp in town. It was very good.
Tomorrow we are off to ride the Trail of Coeur d’Alene.
