Day 2 | Upper Mid-West Tour

Our first ever Harvest Host worked out very well last night.  It was nice and quite on the farm, until sunrise when the roosters started letting us know it was time to rise and shine.


Today we drove though Missouri , and part of Iowa, seeing a lot of farms, the chicken and corn fields seemed to be the most prevalent.  We took a state highway almost the whole way today for a change of pace.  It was the most direct route to where we are tonight, just not the fastest, although only slower by 5 minutes or so on Google Maps.  We were able to stop at a state park just a mile off of the highway for lunch. 


We are a member of another club, Open Roads, I have shared it with a lot of friends that drive something that takes diesel fuel.  It is an amazing club that gives us discounts on diesel, and treats us like a commercial trucker, allowing us ability to pull through the truck lanes at truck stops.  This makes it so much easier to navigate a gas station when the lanes are wider, and NO cars that I have to maneuver around.  But the best part is the price, we are getting great prices right now on diesel, yesterday with the discount we paid $3.16/gal and today we got $3.11.  Once we get up into North Dakota and Montana there are a lot less stations that are part of this network so we will be paying inflated pricing up there.  The pricing we are getting now on diesel is lower than gasoline in Nashville.

Tonight we are staying at another Harvest Host, Cedar Ridge Winery near Cedar Rapids, IA.  


They had great brick oven pizza that we had for dinner and brought some leftovers back for tomorrow. We were pretty hungry, so no pics of the pizza or queso and chip appetizers. 😝

Off to Minneapolis to see some family tomorrow.

Day 8 & 9 | Upper Mid-West Tour

Yesterday, Day 8, Tuesday, we did a lot of driving into the beautiful state of Montana.  It is amazing how beautiful this state is from just the interstate.  We followed the Yellowstone river for at least 100 miles yesterday.  Also crossing the continental divide, and the truck with the BIG diesel engine handled it like a BOSS.  We were set on cruise control and just went flying up and down the mountains, while the semi-trucks were struggling at altitude. Few pictures were taken yesterday on the drive, we just admired the beauty of the state.  This is a rest stop where we had lunch. Later we stopped at a truck stop that was a “travel center” in a small little town to get some fuel, and they had everything that you would normally expect at a truck stop, basically a convenience store, AND a casino, restaurant, and a bakery.  We bought 2 huge cinnamon rolls, this is just one, and yes it is a large to go styrofoam box. Day 5 | Upper Mid-West Tour

Another fun filled day!  I’m not sure I can make another 25 of these, 😜 and we haven’t even started the physically demanding stuff that starts when Jim and Amy Keffer arrive in about 5 days. (Yes this is real and yes we were close, but behind a fence) Today we woke up at 6:00 and got an early start as we wanted to get to Roosevelt North Unit and have a great day. But when we were packing up, and getting ready to leave, I checked my battery levels and they were surprising low, around 62%.  Which I am guessing you think isn’t very low, but after only 1 night and only having a refrigerator going and no heat or A/C as the weather has been amazing here, it should not have been that low.  (And I spent a bunch of $$ upgrading my batteries and system, so they would last longer). Day 11 | Upper Mid-West Tour

We arrived, we are in Glacier National Park.  This is one of our bucket list places.  Neither of us have ever been to Glacier NP, and are both very excited to be here and explore the area.  It is amazing how late the sun stays out here, right now it’s 9:15 Mountain Time and the sun is still out.  I believe the sun will set around 10:00 pm.   Today was mainly a drive and setup day.  We stopped at a local grocery story on the way in and bought some more supplies, and some fuel before getting all of the way up to Glacier as we weren’t sure what the grocery situation would be and thinking that diesel would be more expensive around a national park. This is Flathead Lake that we drove along for 20+ miles.  Once set up, I went for a nice ride into the park and ran into a couple of Backroads tour guides out for a bike ride, so I hopped in with them and did 30 miles.
